As intimated by numerous objects associated with Asia, little was known about the Americas when Van Kessel created this image. To some extent, however, his portrayals of aboriginal peoples can be traced back to authentic sources: upon their return, the artist who travelled to Brazil in the entourage of Prince Maurice of Orange brought new knowledge back with them.
