An elegant group of people has gathered for a meal outside during the hunt. Lemoine clothes his protagonists in historicising, imaginary costumes. Both the motif and style reflect the influence of Jean-Antoine Watteau who had updated the subject of the ‘break in the hunt’ from Netherlandish Baroque painting. Lemoine was actually a history painter but now and again he turned to popular genre painting. A second version, probably executed at a later date, is now at the Museu de Arte in São Paulo.
