The Franciscan monk and later saint Anthony of Padua, who originally came from Portugal, was also revered in Spain. The subject depicted here is based on a legend in which the Christ Child is said to have appeared to the saint in the house of an ordinary citizen, whereupon Anthony took him in his arms. In Cano’s painting Anthony sees the Virgin Mary who has already placed the child in his arms. Like Velázquez, Cano also trained in Seville in the workshop of Francisco Pacheco; he later worked for a period in Madrid, Granada and Malaga.
