Kirchner was known principally for his atmospheric views of northern Italy and Venice. This painting is based on a drawing of Verona from the Giusti Gardens that he made on a stay in the city in 1862. Schack visited the site ten years later and recalled: ‘After our journey had taken us over the Brenner Pass in severe winter temperatures, we warmed ourselves in the southern sun beneath a bright blue sky in the Giusti Gardens at Verona, amid laurels and asters that were still only cautiously opening up into the air.’
