Erminia, the daughter of the King of Antioch, has escaped from her Franconian persecutors and asks a gentle shepherd’s family for shelter. This scene is based on Torquato Tasso’s epic poem ‘Jerusalem Delivered’. This is an unusual theme for Valentin and was most certainly a commission from an educated Roman art collector. The psychologically sensitive rendition of the meeting combines Caravaggesque chiaroscuro with exquisite colouration.
