Eyes directed at something beyond the picture, the mental absorption, and hence the intellectual aspect of artistic activity are typical features of the portrait of an artist. A native of Weilheim in Bavaria, Petel was one of the most important German sculptors of the Baroque era. This portrait was created during a visit to Antwerp in 1628.
