The man in a Hussar uniform cannot be definitively identified. Although it has been proposed that the sitter is Ladislaus Kökényesdi von Vetes, a Hungarian diplomat in the service of Count Franz II Rákóczy, who starting in 1704 spent an extended period at the court of Elector Max Emanuel in Brussels, there is no evidence of this, nor is there any evidence that it was created at this time. The masterful execution of details such as the fur is reminiscent of Vivien's late Self-Portrait of 1730.
