These round pictures illustrate two scenes from Torquato Tasso’s epic poem of the First Crusade, ‘Jerusalem Delivered’. Erminia steals armour belonging to Clorinda, with whom she is competing for Tancred’s love. Clad in this armour, she intends to seek out Tancred, a knight, but has to flee from the enemy after being mistaken for Clorinda and finds safety with the shepherds.
