Carl Morgenstern travelled on the French and Italian Riviera in 1841. Views of the bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer were among his best-known subjects. In 1843, when he painted the scene for the first time, the town belonged to the kingdom of Sardinia and he continued to use its Italian name, Villafranca. Schack commissioned him to produce this copy of a version he had seen in the Städelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt am Main.
