The altarpiece (see inv. no. 35, 719 and 5380) was donated by the patrician Lukas Rem (1481–1541) of Augsburg and his wife, Anna Ehem (married 1518). The fear of the plague conditions the subject matter. As a merchant, Lukas Rem travelled around Europe between Lyon, Lisbon, Antwerp, Cologne and Augsburg.
