While mourning at the empty tomb, Mary Magdalene is surprised by the resurrected Christ. She only recognises him when he calls her name. Barocci captures both the closeness of the protagonists and their distance as, immediately after this scene, Christ says: “Do not touch me”. The artist also expresses this emotional tension through the sensitively composed colouration. In the background, the altarpiece commissioned by Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere shows the silhouette of the Palazzo Ducale in Urbino.
