In the early nineteenth century the mountains around Salzburg and Berchtesgaden became a favourite subject among Romantic and early Realist landscape painters. This picture shows the lake above the Königssee – the Obersee – with the twin peaks of the Teufelshörner (Devil’s Horns) mountain in the dramatic light of an approaching thunderstorm.
