Beweinung Christi

Beweinung Christi

More about this artwork
Botticelli, the artist of beautiful Madonnas as well as masterpieces of pagan and mythological scenes for the house of Medici, experienced a turning point in his creativity under the influence of the Dominican preacher Savonarola. The Lamentation of Christ is a perfect example of this with its Passion theme, its rather sparse setting and the almost choreographic harmony of its figures. SS Jerome, Paul and Peter were included, as the altarpiece was originally commissioned for the Pauline monastery in Florence.
