The painting, formerly on the high altar of the parish church in Tomo near Feltre that is dedicated to St James, depicts a sacra conversazione—the saints in dialogue with the enthroned Mother of God and her child: to the right is John the Baptist with his cross-staff and the banderole ‘Ecce Agnus Dei’; to the left is St James clothed as a pilgrim. The expressive, artificial dynamism in the body language and robes shows the extent to which Parmigianino’s Mannerist painting influenced Bassano.
