A herd of cows is crossing a ford in a Mediterranean landscape. The sun is setting in the distance, behind the mountains. This painting is based on an older composition of Claude Lorrain’s, an etching dated 1636. It is the first of a series of three pictures that the artist was commissioned to paint by the Bavarian Privy Councillor Franz von Mayer. Another work (‘A Seaport at Sunrise’) is also in the Alte Pinakothek; the third in the Dulwich Picture Gallery, London.
