This small-format panel is not a portrait, but instead a study head, used a number of times for paintings by Rubens and his workshop. The sitter was formerly identified as Maria Pypelinckx, Rubens’ mother. This can however be discounted on the grounds that the turn of the head is untypical for a portrait, while the garments are only cursorily indicated.
