The naturalistic depiction of the Christ Child with its sculpture-like gravity exemplifies Masolino’s contribution to the innovations of the Early Renaissance. This is in contrast to the golden background and the Virgin’s softly flowing, sculpturally stylised robes. The conjunction of the Virgin breastfeeding and the Holy Trinity illustrates Christ’s dual nature as true man and true God.
