This Lamentation of Christ, a popular motif for private devotional prayer, was modelled on works found north of the Alps by the Veronese master. Through the expressive depiction of the body of Christ placed on the edge of the sarcophagus and the tearful faces of the mourners, the artist appeals to the emotions of the meditating beholder.
