Thomas of Villanueva (1488–1555), the Archbishop of Valencia from 1544 onwards, was canonised in 1658. Many miracles and acts of Christian love are attributed to him, such as the healing of a lame tailor whom Murillo vividly captures in this altarpiece. The saint, standing in the foreground, is clad in the typical habit of an Augustinian hermit and is blessing the tailor kneeling in front of him. On the left, in the background, that same figure is shown walking down a flight of steps without crutches after being successfuly healed, in front of an awestruck crowd.
