This portrait of the Sacrati family of Ferrara, painted on canvas, is one of the rare family portraits of the northern Italian Renaissance. The exquisite garments and the hunting hawk, wearing a hood bearing the family’s coat of arms, denote the Sacratis’ high social status. The painting was probably a representational piece used as part of a room’s decoration.
