The shadow running diagonally across the central plane divides the intimate scene of the Holy Family in the foreground from the view into the distance across a southern European river landscape. Inspired by Paul Bril’s and Cornelis Poelenburch’s Italianate works, this painting was created after a period Breenbergh had spent in Rome.
