More about this artwork
This panel was part of the high altar of the Dominican church Santa Maria Novella in Florence. The chancel of the church was also decorated by the artist with an important fresco painting. Two wings depicting SS Lawrence and Catherine from Siena are also part of the work. The Madonna is surrounded by an aureole, the iconography of which is taken from Revelation ("mulier amicta sole / a woman clothed with the sun", Rev 12,1 - 2) and symbolizes as well the Immaculate Conception, the maternity of the Virgin and the Assumption.
