This unfinished portrait is reminiscent of portraits of French sculptors from around 1700 in which the head of the sculpture indicates the profession of the sitter. In this case, the sculpture depicts the head of a satyr in an ancient sculpture or one in the style of antiquity. The unfinished state makes it difficult to concretely attribute and contextualize the portrait.
