This painting is one of a pair, together with ‘The Ford in the Woods’. The continuous line of the horizon and the similar arrangement of features in the landscape suggest that they are counterparts. They were probably part of a decorative furnishing. Such large-format paintings inserted in panelling were frequently found at that time in monasteries and churches. The figurative staffage was probably the work of David Teniers the Younger.
