Although Van de Velde never went to Italy, his pastoral scenes set in Mediterranean landscapes were particularly popular. This shepherd idyll combines the figures in a triangular composition formed by the paddle of the oar, the tip of the sail, and the startled ducks taking flight, with its base formed by the side of a boat running parallel to the lower edge of the picture.
