The self-assurance of citizens in the young Dutch Republic is expressed in this portrait, which is the only known full-length and life-sized portrait by Hals. The wealthy cloth merchant is depicted in a theatrical pose against a palatial architectural background hung with drapery. His hand on the hip in a gesture intended to impress, and the sword, ruff, and laced cuffs are motifs that serve a purely representational purpose and are used to heighten the impression made on the viewer.
