Jan Baptist Govaerts, who was appointed court painter in Mainz at the end of his life, takes up a Netherlandish model in these pictures. Kitchen interiors were very popular in the seventeenth century due to the many details as well as the different surfaces of metal and ceramic or the fur of a hare that could be depicted.
The lesser quality of this painting in comparison to the pendant (inv.
no. 6498) makes it likely that the work is a copy.
