This subject is closely linked to the Counter-Reformation as, during the Council of Trent, the Sacrament of Penance was re-evaluated. Through self-knowledge, the confession of guilt, sincere regret and recompense through good deeds, people could contribute towards the forgiveness of their sins. Mary Magdalene, Saint Peter, King David, and Dismas—the Good Thief—stand before Christ who accepts their penance. The wound in his side and that on his hand are a reference to the Passion and Ressurection and are thus a sign of hope for delivery from the Original Sin.
