Giordano obviously studied the character and physiognomies of everyday people in Naples for his numerous half-length portraits of philosophers. He made mercilessly naturalistic portraits of his male models and clothed them in tattered garments. Surrounded by books and scrolls, they represent altruistic solitary individuals, dedicated solely to finding the truth, most of whom can be recognised as outstanding philosophers from antiquity.
