This panel was commissioned by the Nasi brothers for the altar in their family chapel in Santo Spirito in Florence. While the lively lines of the robes and the strong colouration hark back to Raffaellino's teacher, Filippino Lippi, the symmetrical composition is reminiscent of the works of Pietro Perugino. This figure of the Virgin holding the body of Christ on her lap, that originated from images of the Pieta north of the Alps, was widespread in the second half of the quattrocento in Florence. St John the Baptist and St James were probably included in the picture as the namesakes
of family members.
