Rembrandt presents this touching gathering of the Holy Family in the carpenter’s workshop in a monumental genre painting with almost life-sized figures that has a naturalness and worldliness characteristic of his Dutch roots. The painter’s attention lies entirely on capturing the sense of security found in a family and parental love. He thus epitomises Christ’s becoming Man and directly presents the viewer with the promise of salvation.
