Schleich's landscapes reveal the influence not only of his French contemporaries of the Barbizon school, but also of seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish artists. He studied Peter Paul Rubens¿s landscapes in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich, and applied the approach characteristic of these historical models to depictions of his native Bavaria. This view of the area north of Lake Starnberg is among his finest works.
