A shared interest in Italian literature formed the basis of Schack’s association with Feuerbach. The subject of this painting comes from Dante’s Divine Comedy, where, in Canto V of Inferno, Francesca da Rimini and her brother-in-law Paolo Malatesta tell the story of their illicit passion. Feuerbach shows them falling in love while they read the story of the adulterous knight Lancelot.
