Zimmermann was professor of landscape painting at the Art Academy in Milan from 1857 to 1859. This view of Lake Como from the south probably dates from those years. A section of the hilly peninsula dividing the southern part of the lake into two arms appears in the foreground, with Bellagio at its tip. On the left the Monte Grona towers above Menaggio, while Varenna and the pyramid-shaped Monte Legnoncino can be seen on the right.
