This presentation of Christ as the Lord and Redeemer has its roots in medieval pictures of the Maiestas Domini. Christ, seated on a throne, appears above the clouds and is framed by a mandorla. His right hand is raised in the sign of the blessing and, in his left hand, he is holding the Book of Gospels. This work was originally the central panel at the top of a large altarpiece.
