Even during his own lifetime Parmigianino was celebrated as the “reincarnation of Raphael” and is one of the most outstanding masters of Mannerism. His painting is characterised by innovative pictorial inventions, idealised figures and the cool elegance of its coloration. The Carthusian monk in the background is either St Bruno or the person who commissioned the work.
