The empress is depicted in profile facing to the right. Catherine, who was born as Sophie Auguste Friederike von Anhalt-Zerbst in Stettin (now Szczecin). married Peter Ill, Tsar of Russia, in 1745 and became empress of Russia following his death in 1762. Joseph Lander, a pastel artist from Munich, noted on the back panel of the frame that he had painted her likeness 'using imagination' ['d'imagination').
