Schlafender Grabwächter mit Streitkolben und Schwert

Schlafender Grabwächter mit Streitkolben und Schwert

More about this artwork
This impressive painting is part of a series of portrayals of sleeping guards, which the painter from Memmingen created for a "Holy Tomb." Especially in the South German region, it is still customary that Christ's death and resurrection be visually reconstructed in the last days of the Passion Week: A Holy Tomb is erected, in which the Host is placed for veneration; the tomb is often surrounded by depictions of sleeping guards. These panels and a fourth one, which is in England, possibly stem from a documented Holy Tomb from 1521/22 for the parish church of Our Lady in Memmingen.
