It is possible that this painting was based on a lost work by Dieric Bouts, the artist’s father. In the tracery on the window the coat of arms of the city of Leuven (top), the coat of arms of the Guild of Saint Luke (left) and probably the artist’s personal device are shown. The medallions with ‘The Fall’ and ‘Gideon’s Fleece’ (Judges 6:36–40) in the background typologically relate to the importance of the Annunciation and its promise of salvation.
