This unknown, fashionably dressed Florentine patrician had his portrait painted in a three-quarter view—an innovative style of portraiture at that time. The portrait was probably painted on the occasion of his engagement, the cloth wrapped around his right hand documenting a pledge of fidelity. The removal of the top layer of paint explains the greenish colour of the skin.
