After Parma had been recaptured, the military alliance of papal and imperial troops attacked Milan that was occupied by the French, under the protection of darkness, the city gates having been opened as an act of betrayal. Federico Gonzaga is shown on the left-hand edge of the picture on a grey horse, riding into the city at the head of a column of foot soldiers. In the background, Spanish soldiers are driving the enemy along in front of them.
