More about this artwork
This panel, painted on both sides (back: The Crucifixion), was originally part of a small folding altar; an additional part of it is a Presentation in the Temple (back: The Stigmatisation of St. Francis; Lisbon, Gulbenkian Collection). Maria is kneeling in front of the stall in Bethlehem in adoration of the newly born child. To the left is the Annunciation to the Shepherds set in a surprisingly sprawling landscape. In a didactic, supplementary part of the painting is the sacrament of the Eucharist: The Child is laying on a cloth that is decorated with crosses, which resembles the corporal on which the consecrated wafer is placed during mass.
