This exquisite small painting is dominated by the Adoring Virgin kneeling before the child lying on a cloth on the floor. A tender, child-like group of angels—a characteristic feature in the artist’s work—accompanies this liturgical, festive scene that is enriched by symbols of the Eucharist. An ancillary scene on the left shows the annunciation to the shepherds. Here, the eye is drawn into a landscape; its expanse and richness in detail were most certainly influenced by Netherlandish art.
