The artist's gaze from the picture is probing; instead of a wig, he wears a warm fur hat. In his left hand he holds a document, whose text informs the viewer that he has depicted himself at the age of seventy-three. Vivien's depiction of his own face is very careful, and he does not shy away from small imperfections.
