These genre scenes, both of equal size and with a silvery-grey colouring, in unusually large formats are notable for their combination of a fluid, thinly applied painterly style with areas of intricately executed detailing that is characteristic of Paudiß. Like the exhausted peasant and his wife, who are resting on their way to market, the peasant’s wife holds her foot in pain from the strenuous journey, the massive thistle on the left is a biblical symbol of hardship and worry on earth.
