The Landscape near Auvers was acquired from a Swiss gallery in 1986 as a work attributed to Charles-François Daubigny. The circumstances of the acquisition and question of its authenticity were hotly debated in the years to follow, after several parties had disputed the attribution to Daubigny and the painting was not recorded in the catalogue raisonné of the artist. To this day, it is unclear who painted the picture. It is certain that the signature of Daubigny in the lower left corner is not authentic, but added later. Nor has the depicted landscape been conclusively identified. The exhibition »Courbet > Daubigny« offers the opportunity to compare this painting with several authentic works by Daubigny, on display in the adjacent room.
