The legend of the Three Kings is depicted in great detail, from keeping a lookout for the Star of Bethlehem to the adoration of the child and the return journey by sea. Scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and of Christ after the Resurrection are shown to the left and right. The painting was donated to the chapel of the Tanners’ Guild in the Church of Our Lady in Bruges in 1480 by Pieter Bultinc and his wife, Katalijne van Ryebeke. The couple can be seen at the bottom on the left and right.
