The upward gaze denotes the search for inspiration by the creatively minded while, at the same time, it is typical of depictions of St Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians. In Liberti’s case, both are appropriate as he was a composer and in the employment of the church. The later etching includes a text on the sheet of music that refers to art that transcends time. The chain of honour may possibly hint at a specific occasion for which the painting was created as Liberti was appointed organist of the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp in 1628.
