Ravello lies high above Atrani and Amalfi on the Gulf of Salerno and contains some major buildings from the period of Norman rule in the region. The historian Ferdinand Gregorovius included a lengthy description of the Palazzo Rufolo in his Wanderjahre in Italien (Years of Travel in Italy), calling it `a veritable treasure trove of the Saracen style in architecture¿. Klenze, who was active principally as an architect, focused in his paintings on historical buildings in their contemporary context.
