The three monumental paintings (see inv. no. 776, and 1737) are part of a series of twelve hunting pieces that Weenix created between around 1710 and 1716 for the Bensberg hunting lodge near Cologne as court painter to Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine. The central painting shows an impressive day’s bag with an eight-pointer and a wild boar in the foreground on a low balustrade and scenes of stag and boar-hunting with hounds in the background. The combination of the genres of still life, hunting piece, and landscape are based on Flemish examples.
