Veronese was one of the protagonists in the generation of painters in Venice to follow Titian. This depiction of the Virgin Mary, that belongs to his early work, picks up on a popular design, placing the Mother of God in front of the imposing base of a column. The Virgin and the Christ Child, who is holding a goldfinch in his hands as a symbol of the Passion to come, look down attentively at a bearded man, probably the unknown donor of this picture, who turns to Mary asking for her intercession.
